Unpopular opinion: horses are the best way to actually explore the world /u/wt_anonymous Minecraft on reddit

Elytras are technically faster, but you go so fast that you’re going to miss anything that is there on the way.

Say you’re in a new world trying to find a certain biome. So you fly and fly in one direction, possibly thousands of blocks until you find one.

But if you had decided to just ride a horse (or walk) there is a very likely chance you would have found it closer by just looking around as you travel. It may not be directly ahead, but a little bit off your direct path. You just won’t notice if you’re flying past it at mach 2.

I basically went through this trying to find a cherry grove. I went thousands of blocks east before finding one, and later realized there were several groves way closer.

Not to mention all the other things you miss. Tons of structures or interesting landmarks on the way.
