Hey all, my group had a dispute this week that might end our playing sessions. Trying to get some second opinions. We had not played since November when we met on Wednesday and we had a new member, my girlfriend who was all things considered excited to try. My friend and I are the main group with my step-dad DM so this seemed to be a nice group to keep a campaign going. We had a wizard and Druid both level 5 and my girlfriend also made a wizard. Here is where the issue I believe is, to start us off with the new character we were transported to Eridinia, and the rules were. Anything magic needs to be cast with a 1000 gold piece cost gem- both myself and friend were “unaware” we needed this so we arrived in the world and we were level 5 spell casters with no abilities anymore and had to figure out how to cast spells and stuff again. When we clarified what cost a gem it got a little uncomfortable for my friend and I. The DM had decided that even race features and class abilities that aren’t melee damage were to use these gems. (Elven speech and Dragonborn breath weapon). So we tried playing through this and the way we had to figure it out was through my girlfriend (brand new player) her character was apparently not so eager to share the knowledge & we eventually ended up in a magic store where we eventually “got the information” for our characters finally. Now at this point we haven’t done anything but try and figure out how to regain our magic, which is now tied to more than spell components. Each cast of wild shape, each spell, each breath weapon charge would cost this 1000GP. It got sticky as my friend was pretty upset and was wanting to change characters and I was trying to figure out a way to make it work without completely crippling economy and experience going forward. (If I’m a Druid why would I even bring all the spells if I should only spend 1000 on the best). But the DM freaked out and called us ungrateful as this had been a surprise and my friend is on medication for depression so as soon as the yelling started I needed to get him outta there. Fast forward to today I talked to my stepdad about maybe restarting fresh and talking about it and he said idk. Were we unreasonable? Or was there something wrong with the DMs rule changes surrounding magic use.
