So I just got a Bastion at level 10, and was having fun going through the list of magic items to see what I could make for people, and was briefly delighted at the idea of making an Instrument of the Bards for our bard. Came back down to earth when I noted the bit about “you must have all the spells prepared every day you spend crafting the item”, i.e. the same rule as if you were crafting an item outside a bastion. Which, fair enough!
But then I realized… the only class that can cast all four of the shared spells in IotB is Wizard (Fly, Invisibility, Levitate, Protection from Evil and Good), while the unique spell list for each instrument in every case includes at least one spell that a Wizard cannot cast. Under the 2014 rules, this wouldn’t be a problem, as magic item creation could be a collective work with different people adding spells. But the 2024 rules are clear, for both Bastion and regular magic item creation: the main creator must have prepared every single spell that the item could cast.
