I have worked at 4 different renowned fortune 500 companies (Non FAANG) over the past 12 years with each tenure lasting anywhere between 2-4 years. Due to some career missteps and personal mental health issues, the highest title that I have ever had is a “Software Engineer”. I was hoping to get promoted at my current company (a household name with strong engineering culture) a year after I joined but it hasn’t been happening. However, my performance has been decent and my manager and team likes me. What has kept me content so far is my very nice manager, great work life balance and remote friendliness of my employer. I made $180K – $200K total comp in a medium COL city for the past few years which is not bad. However, my manager is refusing to grant refresher stock this year and my total comp will decrease to $165K as a result.
I’m once again feeling great mentally and given my strong knowledge, experience and skill set, I would like to test the job market and increase my pay and title. The time is right. I believe I’m more than capable for senior and potentially staff roles. However, I want to know if prospective employers will see the absence of a senior title in negative light. What can I do to increase my chances of getting hired as a senior at FAANG or equivalent?
