How do I handle an NPC attacking another NPC and how do I let players intervene? /u/MagicianR3d DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hi, new DM here!
I am planning to have an NPC betray another NPC by attacking them (maybe onetapping them). Let’s assume this comes out of nowhere and no one expects it. I want to give the players a chance at intervening so that it doesn’t turn into a cutscene where I take agency from them. How do I do that? I’m afraid that by simply making them roll initiative they might interpret it as “we have to fight this guy”, while the betrayer is not actually hostile towards them. Any advice?
