Why are dogs so capable of stealing your heart so quickly? /u/Watch4whaspus No such thing as stupid questions

My kids have been asking for a dog for about 4 years. My wife and I were on the same page about “no dogs” for about 2.5 of those years. For the last year and a half I was the hold out. I didn’t feel like I could take on anything else. I finally caved and we got a dog about a month ago. A rescue dog who’s a senior. How did we ever live without him? It’s like he’s been a part of the family forever. I find myself looking forward to going home to see him standing there wagging his tail. Obviously my wife and kids come first, but my relationship with this dog is different than anything I’ve ever experienced. What gives?
