Was this a fair character death? /u/candle-lit DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’ve been in a campaign for like ~6-7ish sessions. It’s my first time playing a tabletop rpg.

Our party passed by a neutral gnoll keep in the mountains, and so we did some trading with them. The DM was making a tally of every time we had antagonised the gnolls, and when it went to five, he planned to make us enter combat with them. When we were about to leave peacefully, the DM egged my character to go talk to the gnolls myself because “it would be funny” (I will never trust him again).

I almost immediately pissed off the gnolls (after jokingly threatening them after they stole some of my stuff) and they rushed over to kill me immediately. I jumped off cliffs to escape (the gnolls also did to follow me) and I didn’t spend a single turn trying to fight them, I was just trying to escape. After chasing my character the entire way down the mountain, I died after an hour and a half of running. My friend who cared a lot about my character also tried to defend me, but they also ended up dying. The other party members refused to help us knowing they’d die if they intervened (which fair one of their characters also had a grudge against my character). The DM also had my character sickened for the last couple sessions (contracted a magical disease with no possible cure which I’m realising is a little bullshit now), so I was basically outmatched by all four of the gnolls, who were all the same level as me (lvl 5).

I don’t wanna be that one player, but I’m really bummed and don’t really know if I actually want to continue playing anymore 🙁 This was after the DM did a google form and asked the party how much we cared about our characters where I answered that I really cared about my character. I don’t know if I’m being a sore loser but I’m just really bummed out about the whole thing :/
