Just introduced new player to game and then my partner blew up in 4k /u/holybaconslap DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I just had to share this story because it is insane and now that I know all parties are okay, extremely funny.

I (20F) run a game for a 6 person party, we are over 100 sessions in and all love the game to bits. Recently, we decided to invite another player (making us an ambitious 7, but I’m experienced enough to know I can handle that number of players). To set the scene, this new player is rather nervous and is doing amazing at introducing her character and has some insane rp for someone who has just joined. We are having a ball, getting to know her and particularly my partner (20M), has already had some good discussion with this new character. All is going really well. Two other members decide to seek out an NPC they had previously upset, so we quickly cut over to them to see what they are doing. Mid exceptionally emotional rp, a light from Discord (we play on r20 and use discord to video call) catches my eye mid sentence. My words sort of slowly die down as the light grows hugely, bright white, and my partners camera freezes. There’s a huge BOOM on his mic and then a fireball erupts across his carpet. Obviously,we are all panicking and we hear him shouting curses as he starts dousing the fires. We are all sat, in shock and silence, completely unable to help. I should mention, he has been my partner for a long time and lives about 30 mins away by car. So this boom goes off, black smoke pours out of the room. We are all horrified. Eventually, the smoke stops, the flames stop as he smothered them and he reappears… grinning with his thumb up as if NOTHING HAPPENED. Long story short, he ended up in A&E with some burns but mostly superficial and nothing major, I’ll be picking him up shortly. The poor new player just sat, wide eyed as she watched this unfold… she probably thinks we are mental 🤣🤣🤣

Message of the day; don’t light candles and leave cans of aftershave and a lighter next to it – it may blow up and it will set fire to your bedroom. Everyone involved is fine – my partner is laughing at his own stupidity on this one. Best part is the second time they’ve upset the NPC and the second time this NPC has been cut off mid dialogue due to an emergency I am beginning to think they are cursed!!!
