Hi! I’m a high school senior who’s starting to receive their college decisions. I applied as a CS major so it’s crazy competitive and I’m starting to get worried that I won’t get into a “good” school. Given the harsh state of the industry for undergrads and new grads, I’m wondering how much of an impact the school I attend will have on my chances of landing a job at top tech companies.
I’ve heard that it’s hard to stand out because there are just so many people, and a lot of them are qualified. I guess my questions are 1) how much does the school you attend affect your changes of landing a SWE job/internship at a company (eg. do employers care, does it help you in any way)
and 2) if I don’t end up going to a “good” school, what are some things I can do to stand out and be more appealing to recruiters (referrals? personal projects? a sea of green boxes on GitHub?)? Thank you so much!
