An average software engineer with 4+ years of experience who feels stuck /u/bs_123_ CSCQ protests reddit

So I am a Software Developer with 4+ years or experience who works with Java. I work in a company called Cerner which has now been acquired by Oracle.

I wanted to switch now and I am finding it really hard to get even an interview.

1) When I started initially I got to work on making REST APIs for microservices using Java, Springboot and Docker. Did some performance testing for the APIs using Jmeter. 2) After that I was shifted on different project. It was a monolith based on Java and Spring. Did various feature work on this tech stack. 3) Meanwhile I was making a personal project with my friend using Django (Python Web Framework). He was thinking of making a startup out of it. Even I started thinking maybe we can till we realized the challenges and also how difficult it was to continue this with our work. So we gave up at some point. After that I thought maybe I should move to Python domain and started searching for Python based jobs. I got 3-4 interviews in small companies but I realized that even though I have written codes using Python it was nothing like Industry standards. And I need to learn class based coding in python. And then I stopped searching the job (should have continued kinda regret about it now). 4) Meanwhile in office the work continued on same tech stack of Java, Spring and MySQL where we just continued adding new features to the codebase. I even worked on making UIs accessible using GWT(Google Web Toolkit) which I personally didn’t like given how old GWT is and no one in the market uses. I have no clue why the company in which I worked even thought of going ahead with GWT for UIs. 5) After Oracle acquisition we are now working in Oracle project where the only new things are use of TypeSpec and OpenAPI to generate service and model classes for REST APIs. Otherwise it is same old Java, Spring, MySQL and now even Oracle DB. Also I am making new UIs using OJET (Oracle own UI Framework). 6) My friend again reached out to me for some project and this time he has actually got in touch with a company who needs some application developed for them. We have started working on it but this time using Springboot because I don’t want to keep switching b/w Java and Python. In this project I have learnt few things about Azure because we have decided to use Azure for deployment.

Can someone please guide what should I do to get interviews. Sometimes I feel I have wasted 4 years. In my current work I don’t think anything will change. And the longer I stay in this company the more I remain stuck with similar work. I know I should have realized it earlier and tried to get out of this company earlier. But what is done is done. Please tell what I can do to change it now.
