Words of wisdom on first overcoat? /u/hronikbrent /r/malefashionadvice

Relocating from the Bay to New York, so looking to step up my wardrobe a bit both in fashion and warmth. A nice overcoat seems like it’ll be the biggest win in making a notch in both of those. Any mistakes that folks have made when getting one that they can advise against making?

How much room are folks typically leaving when trying it on? I think I’m getting a bit hung up because I’m imaging that what I’ll be wearing underneath will vary so much day to day? Also, how much warmth are folks expecting to get from the overcoat itself vs the layers underneath?

I guess for example, I tried on a suitsupply cashmere overcoat yesterday that I absolutely loved in the store with a sweater on underneath. But I can see myself feeling it might be too tight with another layer on underneath or too thin by itself.
