How do people that can’t read function in stores and other places? /u/Reallywhoamianyway No such thing as stupid questions

Ok, so right off the bat, I realize I’m making some generalizations that are most likely inaccurate. So keep that in mind. I realize that this will all be second-hand knowledge, and that’s fine. Maybe there are some folks that learned to read late in life and may chime in.

This is a serious, but likely stupid question.

So I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for people that can’t read. Idk, it just does something to me hearing about people that can’t read. So how do they navigate the “normal” things in life like buying food, getting a driver’s license, finding somewhere to live?

I would assume that they aren’t in the ideal employment situation, so money is probably tight. How do they budget and check prices, especially when they need to (I would imagine) be pretty frugal? Idk, maybe numbers and prices are different.

I’m curious to hear some stories about how they manage life. I’d imagine they are extremely adaptive and resourceful…
