Help me settle an argument. In your country, are you allowed to do “basic” electrical work yourself, such as installing a new light in your home, replacing a damaged power lead, or replacing a broken plug socket? /u/oldtrafford1988 No such thing as stupid questions

I’m from the UK.

I got flamed, downvoted and called a “dickhead” in /r/AskAnAustralian because I was surprised that they’re not allowed to do any of these basic tasks. One person even said “you’re allowed to change a plug yourself? That’s horrifying”

I asked someone “so what do you do if you accidentally damage an electrical appliance’s plug or power lead?” and they all said “throw it away and buy a new one”. I think that is pretty awful IMO, very wasteful.

The general response from them was that we (the UK) are the “weird ones” who are doing something “really dangerous” by not making it illegal for people to do these basic little tasks.

Is this accurate? What are the rules in your own country?
