Why isn’t there a national database allowing physicians to see which pharmacies have any given medication in stock? /u/midnightsunofabitch No such thing as stupid questions

Due to the ongoing A.D.H.D. drug shortage, every month I have to call about half a dozen pharmacies before I find one that has Vyvanse in stock. Then I notify my physician and let him know which pharmacy to send the prescription to.

My cousin has diabetes. He’s been taking Ozempic for years. He has to call around a dozen pharmacies before finding one with stock.

Why is the responsibility put on the patient to chase the medication down? Like the title says, why isn’t there a national database that lists which pharmacies have which drugs?

I understand theft is a concern, so the database wouldn’t need to be accessible to the general public. But why not create one and allow doctors to have access to it so THEY can tell YOU which pharmacy near you has your medication available?

Why doesn’t this exist?

EDIT: Additionally, wouldn’t it save pharmacies a ton of time/frustration if they didn’t have the phone ringing off the hook with people calling to check if they have weight loss or ADHD drugs in stock?
