Senior Dev. Always had good annual reviews, raises, etc. Recently had to take some unexpected intermittent FMLA for an autoimmune illness due to a failed therapy first time ever takingleave. Employer has always been aware of Illness.
Manager scheduled a 1:1 day of return for next day. Thought nothing of it since we usually have bi-weekly. Topic of discussion was ‘performance issue’ related to some work being incomplete and not leaving a note on a ticket that needed to be reassigned. Apologized for getting ill. Thought nothing more of it.
I was told it was informal and wouldn’t affect anything. Two weeks later, I see a workday task from manager and HR that was entered day of warning, I’m excluded from bonuses and on probation for 90 days which would include my annual performance review and need to acknowledge. I didn’t acknowledge.
What would you do? I almost turned in my resignation, but think I’m going to ride this out until review so that I don’t do something without thinking it through.
I understand the empotus of a new manager on an existing team to clean house and get ‘better’ people (usually read ‘cheaper’), but I’m literally blown away.
I’ve done everything asked of me with what I’d thought was positive feedback, but it doesn’t seem to be about compliance but rather getting sick instead. Maybe my mistake was saying “it is possible that I’ll need time off for a change of therapy” ahead of time? This isn’t a litigious inquiry. If I’m not getting the job done, I need to go. Right to work probably covers the situation.
I’m financially as secure as anyone is, mortgage is paid off, no real debt, just a truck payment to complain about. Just love the company and what I’m doing and the complexity of the problems I get to solve daily and don’t want to end up starting over somewhere else!
