I have a hat. I like my hat. I wear it a lot. People around me see me wearing my hat lots and think “this man must enjoy putting things on his head” and so every birthday and Christmas I am given a hat or beanie that is obviously expensive and well-made, but which I invariably will not wear much because it is not identical to my hat. I genuinely appreciate the thought and care that’s given towards trying to get me a gift based on observable qualities that I possess, but I do not want any more hats, beanies, chapeaus or other headwear. How do I communicate this to my loved ones
