Move my career toward full remote (and a bit of ranting, sorry) /u/Azkabainemule CSCQ protests reddit

Hello guys! I can here to try and move toward the AI/CS field and I’d really need some advice.

I’ll start with my educational path to better explain where I’m starting: 1) I’ve got a bachelor degree in information engineering during which I had a 1 month experience in coding a Neural network for predicting photovoltaic panels energy production in Switzerland for my thesis. During the bachelor I had a few courses in java, r, MATLAB an C++ where they also explored algorithms and data science but as deeply as in CS courses. 2) I got master degree in bioengineering where I studied some biology, I bit more IT (manly pythons, a bit of automation, control systems etc… But mostly on the mathematical side and with just a bit of coding to see the theory at work). During those years I specialized in biomechanics and FEA (computational mechanics basically). For my thesis I’ve modelled and analyzed breast mechanics in presence or absence of a tumour and replacement prosthetic. 3) following the master I got my PhD in civil engineering. No, I didn’t switch field, I received founding from their department for my research. My PhD topic was studying the mechanical behaviour of healthy and tumour cell/aggregates and simulate them using numerical and FEA techniques. I wrote a good thesis with my work but nothing world changing or worth more than an appreciative smile from my professor and colleagues. During the PhD I’ve studied Fortran (both 90 and 70), numerical methods and applied mathematics and statistics to work at my custom made subroutines and models. I’ve also coded some automatic tests and wrote a few scripts for the automatic generation or elaboration of the data I had to work with in order to save time.

After my PhD I went to the Italian job market in search for a place in the industry. Now, for reasons I don’t wish to divulge, I’m stuck living in tllhe north of Italy near Venezia. The only jobs I managed to get where in testing and quality for the biomedical sector which means been a bureaucrat…

I want more from my life, or at least a job that keeps me on the technical side and let me learn and grow professionally. Since I’m stuck geographically, I was thinking of boosting my IT and CS skills to enter that job market and go full remote.

Do you have any advice on what to invest my time in? Are there certifications and I should try to obtain to convince employers that I might be worth hiring? I really need to turn my job situation around cause it’s been very depressing working at something I hate after all this year’s spent in Accademia.

I’m sorry if after reading this you feel like you wasted your time or if you feel like I’m whining over nothing. I simply feel helpless and need some advice.
