Failing on shoes – any recs for roomy toe box shoes that aren’t barefoot? /u/jusbot /r/malefashionadvice

I’m striking out left and right here. Looking for something in wide (ee) sizes with a wider toe box that isn’t barefoot. (I got a pair of xeros and like them but I can’t wear them daily.) I have a fairly high instep.

I work in a Makerspace at a university and I’m on my feet and walk a lot. Usually wear a flannel or a work shirt with jeans. I don’t need to look academic or office professional, but I don’t want to look a mess either. Clean sneakers are cool but would prefer a lightweight boot, rugged oxford, hiker, etc .. something more workshop-y?

I just tried 6 pairs of Keens. They were all almost good enough but had some flaw (loose in the heel, too tight in the middle of the foot, stiff toe cap rubs funny, etc.)

I bought some Oboz and thought they were going to work out but they rub my toes in a bad way.

I used to be a NB 574 devotee, but I’ve recently switched to wearing wide (ee) shoes only. Got sick of trying to make regular width work. NB has cut way back on available wides, and the last two pair I bought I burned through pretty quickly.

Ideas?
