I am trying to get that raise become a senior engineer this year and this opportunity arose at work where basically one of our services is toast and we need to replace a library in it entirely. I found the problem initially, so I came up with a solution and presented it. Some other, more senior engineers, also want in to drive the ticket and I’m getting the feeling management will give the all stars with 4-5+ YOE over mine the green light since the issue is high priority.
While one of the seniors solution is also good too, it is more time consuming than mine. We need to get this fix out to unblock test. I feel like I don’t have a place to speak out against someone with several more years of experience than I do in this situation. I’m not scared to, but I imagine it would result in management trusting in someone more senior than me and I would think it makes me look bad / a wasted effort.
Within a few hours of mayhem, I already got up a working, but super scuffed, running instance of the application than just needs some cleaning up to be in good shape (which I also let management know about), but we will likely hear the plan next week. I’m thinking about how I should respond and react to the potential conversations next week.
Thoughts and advice would be great. I find I need to work at my office politics game a bit, but I believe my technical skills are up to par of a senior. That is why I am being more conscious on being more aggressive about my ideas and making sure I am seen and known for my efforts, but I know there is also a boundary too.
