Joining my first irl group for a campaign, need advice /u/dawn_of_dae DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hey guys!

I’m a newbie (I only got interested because I recently played Baldur’s Gate 3 for the first time, not gonna lie) and my only dnd experience is online with strangers. No campaign has lasted very long and honestly the planning, as to be expected, has been of low quality and effort.

I got in touch with a group that will be starting a campaign this weekend. All of them are experienced and have been running campaigns for years. They know I’m a newbie and they told me they don’t mind but I’m kind of nervous. I feel like I’ll make a lot of mistakes and ruin their experience.

Another thing I should mention is that they are all quite a bit older than me. I’m 23 and all of them are in their 30’s and 40’s. I don’t mind but I feel like it’s a bit of a generational gap and I’m not sure if that’ll matter in the campaign.

Last but not least, should I try to cater my character to the groups’ needs? Do people discuss this before hand or does everyone play what they enjoy? I’m honestly very excited about my character and even began writing a short backstory already but I don’t know whether it’ll be good for my group.

Oh and is there any etiquette I should follow? Any unwritten rules a newbie wouldn’t know? I’d appreciate any help, honestly. I’m too excited to start and that makes me double nervous.
