Why can’t they make passenger planes as fast as fighter jets. /u/Icy_Review_899 No such thing as stupid questions

It’s my understanding that fighter jets can fly more than twice as fast as airliners. Is there a reason why airlines aren’t using planes at or near to similar speeds? Imagine being able to fly from Las Angeles to Sydney in 8 hours instead of 15.
