Was bullying in American schools ever as bad as the movies? /u/Guess-who-back No such thing as stupid questions

I feel like most of the stereotypical high school movies didn’t get the same idea from thin air. The jocks stuffing nerds in lockers and flushing their heads in toilets. How widespread was this kind of thing really? Were swirlies, wedgies and stuff like that ever a common basis thing?
