Why does the American accent sound normal to me in movies, but weird when I hear it in person and is it a common thing for English speakers in other countries? /u/Oppai_Lover21 No such thing as stupid questions

I’m Ghanaian and I just realized how weird the American English accent sounds in person, despite me not even noticing an accent when I’m watching an American movie.

Is there a reason for that? Is it common a phenomenon?
