Why do people tip the waiter instead of the chef? /u/Fraud_D_Hawk No such thing as stupid questions

I’m from a country where tipping is not a cultural norm. In fact, tipping here is often considered disrespectful.

As a result, I’ve never personally tipped anyone; the idea is very foreign to me.

I’ve seen videos where people say they like the food and tip the waiter. But the waiter had nothing to do with preparing the food. If you want to tip someone, wouldn’t tipping the chef make more sense?
