Cloud Engineer to SOC Analyst? Advice /u/BrianSal_05 CSCQ protests reddit

Hi,

(Sorry if this feels like brain vomit)

I feel like I’m about to take an important career decision and I want your opinions.

I graduated June 2024, I managed to land a Job as a Cloud Engineer at an MSP/Consulting Firm. Been working for 6 months. During college I, did a cybersecurity specialization (A semester full into cybersecurity), I feel passionate about it and it’s something I’d like to pursue.

Recently. I was offered a SOC Analyst position at a private company. The SOC team is small 4-5 engineers (Huge international company, engineers dispersed in different time zones). The recruiter mentioned that the CISO and Leadership are very experience and knowledgeable, the team plans to grow slowly. As some of the SOC operations are still outsourced.

Reason to Stay as a Cloud Engineer (Azure)

  1. Training Opportunities: Paying for certifications and even private tutoring with microsoft engineers.

    1. Cybersecurity Pathway: They’ve expressed that I could expand into cybersecurity within the company. And get assigned Microsoft certifications in the future
  2. Before graduating a cloud engineer told me to avoid support roles in cloud and go straight into consulting, that being the fastest way to getting a high salary position.

  3. Future Projects: The team right now has ran out of projects and jr engineer like me have been relegated to help desk atm. They have interesting projects in the way that I will take part of. Though they are not coming in recent months.

Reasons to Consider the SOC Analyst Tole;

1 Salary increase: 18K year salary increase.

  1. I originally wanted to get into cybersecurity and applied to a lot of SOC jobs but didn’t land any.

I was already unsure whether to continue as a Cloud engineer as I’m a really good developer, but my internship experiences left me not wanting to oerdsie development. But I am also the first college graduate of my family and I feel I owe it to them to also provide for my family, personally is something I want to do. And I’m unsure that pursuing Cloud or Cybersecurity would bring me the level wealth I want for me and my family. Don’t hear a lot of 7 figure jobs or 7 figure engineers from cloud and cyber. And I feel like this puts me even farther away from developing.

I also don’t know if a SOC Analyst 1 position is a step up, lateral or step down from where I’m at.
