Why are the same boomers that grew up with David Bowie, Prince, and Michael Jackson upset with the new generation not being “masculine”? /u/throwaway-ulta No such thing as stupid questions

Maybe it’s just because it’s Instagram but anytime there is a feminine man or something as simple as a dude giving a makeup tutorial on Instagram reels, you will see comments with HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of likes talking about “what is wrong with this generation”, “parents don’t beat their sons enough”, “disgusting”, “i’d disown my son if he posted this shit”, etc etc. I could understand this type of sentiment 50 years ago but… i really thought them older ppl have moved on from that already? like literally KISS’s signature look is an entire face of makeup? Michael Jackson, Prince, David Bowie, Freddy Mercury, etc etc were known for strong bold eye makeup looks and I’m pretty sure these “masculine” old men complaining on Instagram all loved these artists growing up.

So what is with the cognitive dissonance? It seems kind of weird that tons of men who wore makeup/didn’t always look traditionally masculine were not only accepted but revered in pop culture during the 70s-90s. Why then do older gens complain about how younger men are “losing their masculinity” and are “too feminine”? Do they just think it’s only cool if rockstars do it or… idek.
