How often do 3rd party sellers get away with selling “like-new” products as “brand new”? /u/ZeroPauper Singapore

Recently bought an electronic item on Shopee, from a legitimate brick and mortar store with 4.3 stars on google. Price of item was actually above recommended retail price but I bought it anyway as it was out of stock at most other stores.

Seller messaged saying they’re throwing in free screen protector, I thought nothing about it. When I picked it up at the physical store, they said the screen protector was already pasted for me, I still stupidly thought nothing about it.

Went home to check the warranty status and turns out it was already activated in start Nov last year.

Called the shop and they said, sometimes manufacturer will activate warranty the moment they send out stock to them. I can contact them with the receipt to extend warranty. I said I was not comfortable with a brand new product having warranty already activated and they offered a full refund.

How often do brick and mortar shops do such shady business? For older folks that don’t check on warranty and stuff, they would never realise they’re getting scammed.
