I just want to tell you of an awesome moment for my character in yesterday’s game. /u/Carlyconure DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’m playing a wild maguc sorcerer, lvl 2.

We’re in a cave with a few bats. After we take out the first bat (super easy to kill in 1 shot apparently), we get surrounded by more. There’s about 30 of them now.

It turns out they only do 1 point of damage, but they mob each round. So they swarmed each of our characters and are picking off the last of our hit points 1 by 1. My party is low on HP from the previous encounter (i came out unscathed so i could take a couple of extra hits), and the barbarian is out of rages, and we’re all out of resources other than cantrips. I do however have 1 spell slot left. After getting hit by the groups we also needed to make a con saving throw. If you fail, you get a point of exhaustion.

I have a plan, but in order for it to work i need to be alone to take all the hits instead of being split between the party. As the initiative order was it worked out for me to tell everyone to get out “i have a plan”, and everyone else now being almost out of HP listens abd leaves to the exit of the cave.

I hit 1 bat with sorcerer burst and roll the random type of damage which was lightning. Then i was prepared for them all (about 25 bats) to swarm me, and I’d use my last spell slot to cast spiny shield knowing that I’d take no damage, and every bat that hit me would insta die from the shield damage. I had expected to take about half of them out.

What had actually happened was, the last hit that i made on that last bat, standing there with my arms out was enough to trigger the mechanics of them fleeing after a certain amount of damage being dealt to them all.

So, from my party’s point of view, they have they’re sorcerer tell them to get out i have a plan, then seeing a burst of lightning, and all the bats gone and thinking i did something so awe inspiring.

She of course is not going to let them know what really happened and bathe in their awestruckness of her.

I told my friends what the plan was, and we all laughed super hard because as awesome as that would have been, this was perfect narratively.
