If any of my players are reading this leave now. Major spoilers ahead.
I’m planning out a campaign in gonna start mid next year. Right now I’m writing out all of the big plot beats I wanna hit. This is my general structure. I wanna put it into 3 acts.
The world is a religious dytopian. Council of Thorns is the head church and governance along with The Bureau. The church handles law and the army, the bureau handles business and currency.
- Start of the campaign. The players are framed and accused of stealing an important religious item and are labeled as criminals. They spent the first third of the campaign exploring the world outside of their government regulated areas they’ve lived in most of their lives, helping people, and joining up with a resistance group. They also discover there’s a cult who actually stole the religious artifact and is using it to try and summon a demon. Near the end they’re going to make one big push with the resistance group on the council to try and free the world. However they’ve overpowered, the leader of the resistance is killed, and the players are sent to the Aether World (basically hell) by one of the 7 heads of the religion after finding out he’s secretly the leader of the cult.
After this, I wanna have a 2 year time skip. The players are sent to the aether world and spend 2 years finding some cool new powers, growing stronger through survival, and powering them up in prep for when they return. (admittedly, I’m stealing this from one piece)
Eventually they all find each other again and the first half of act 2 will be about them fighting their way out of the aether world. From there the second half of act 2 I was thinking of having the players come back to the world only to find the cult and the church are in a full on region destroying war over the remaining 2 artifacts, as the cult needs all 3 to summon the demon. The group fights the cult and the church, building back up and becoming the new heads of the resistance faction and ends with them working their way down to hell after they obtain one of the artifacts that buffs their existing abilities so they can fight the demon lord. However after they defeat him they discover that the God of the church is actually the true demon, a soul of a powerful lich that possessed God over 5000 years ago and has been controlling and influencing the world since, like a deity controlling parasite like those ant fungus things.
That will lead them into act 3 where they will come back to earth, finish beating what remains of the church and cult, and prepping to kill God. Still fleshing out act 3.
But yeah, this is what I’ve come up with so far. Like I said, lot of inspiration from one piece and this book series I read called Mistborn. I’m open to all comments. I was this to be a escalating stakes high fantasy action sort of game, kinda like dark souls almost. Where the PCs start off killing zombies but by the end they’re fighting beings some aren’t even sure truly exist.
