I bought a pre-owned peacoat earlier today. It is snug but not too tight across the chest and is sized 38R which is my normal size (I am 5’9 and 12 1/2 stone). I’m not sure if it’s a genuine US Navy Peacoat but it is made from Kersey Wool which would suggest it’s old enough to be one. The label reads:
Coat, Man’s, Wool Kersey Dark Blue E/M DSA-1-4824 Size 38R
100% Wool Dry Clean Only
I would prefer the coat to be a little smaller across the shoulders but wonder if the coat is just too big full stop. Unfortunately I can’t post pictures on this subreddit so I’d like to hear from anyone else who owns a US Navy peacoat which fits on the chest but which is wider on the shoulders. I live in the UK and am wondering if this 50 year old US coat genuinely is 38R but cuts a wider and more boxy profile than I am used to seeing in 2025 England.
I’m not looking for a perfect fit from a cheap second hand coat and can cope with the jacket being slightly oversized but if it’s definitely too big I’ll have to keep looking for an affordable wool coat.
Thanks all.
