In a few days, I will be running a Maze session as the second to last session before the end of the campaign and I wanted to share my maze as well as all of its features!
The Maze is leading to a colosseum where my party (3 level 20 characters) will fight a demon who has been masquerading as a god. The party is entering with a small group of worshippers of the demon as part of a ritual by the civilization on the edge of the maze.
Features: The whole time, they will be hunted by a Nightwalker, I chose this because of its Finger of Doom ability making use of paralysis and its Annihilating Aura being a good way to signal when it is nearby without them seeing it.
The Nightwalker is in cahoots with the gargoyles of Grey Gargoyle Tower, and when they are within the green ring of Grey Gargoyle Tower, the Nightwalker will gain on them twice as fast if they cannot hide from the gargoyles sight.
The blue ring is territory claimed by a group of fanatics of the demon who will make sure that the party worships the demon before they play nice. This will require some deception or help from the small group that entered with the party.
While in this area, they may encounter an imprisoned fanatic wailing and screaming as he is led away. He will call to the party to help him and that he “doesn’t want to go to Nothic Alley”. If they help him without alerting other fanatics, he will give them a vague map of the maze which tells them where a few things generally are; including:
The Hermits Grove (he was trying to get here)
Nothic Alley
The Area that the gargoyles patrol
Where his old friend was last spotted (the triangle marker)
He says that the Hermit in the Hermits grove can lead them to the key for the end of the maze.
On their way to the hermits grove, they may encounter a wounded white fox (a common sacrificial animal similar to a goat in this setting). If the party heals it, it will lead them directly to the grove and alert them of any traps along the way.
In the grove, they encounter a hermit sitting on a bench surrounded by foliage and greenery, he tells them to sit and when they do, he tells a story about a man who hid the key in the Pale Fanatics tower before it was taken over by the fanatics and barred shut, he tells of a way into the tower through a dimension gate in the Blackstone tower to the east. If the party sits and listens, the plants start to grapple them and try to pull them in which they must escape from.
Near Nothic Alley to the east, the party may stumble upon a Nothic who has had his eye stolen and is trapped in a crack in the wall with a flame trap outside(circle marker.) He says if they find his eye, he will lead them through Nothic Alley If they loot the skeleton near the key to Nothic Alley(star marker), they find the eye and the blind Nothic may lead them through. If they go without the Blind Nothics help, they will be taunted with their deepest secrets by the Nothics in the Alley who try to turn the small group of worshippers against the party and eventually will attack the party.
This is only about 1/3 of all the things in the maze but this post is long enough. Lmk if you want to hear about the rest of the features!
