What’s the right amount of affection in casual hookups? /u/godzillablowsfire Sex

I (M32) have had significantly more casual sex in the last year and a half since my last break up and an issue I keep having is that I tend to be very affectionate with women even though we’re only hooking up casually. It creates issues in that they think I’m looking for something more serious or it makes them want something more serious (the underlying issue being I’m not in a place for a relationship rn) despite whatever communication we have had about the stage of our relationship.

This manifests in hand-holding, hair rubbing, romantic kissing, emotional support, cuddling, kissing their hands or foreheads, etc. I often feel like our conversations veer into personal/emotional connection fairly quickly and it makes casual sex feel risky in terms of someone catching feelings. These are things that I do naturally, “going with the flow”, and are just how I relate to my sexual partners in general but I’m worried it’s having a negative impact because it’s sometimes not aligned with my feelings about them. It’s been viewed as an “unspoken promise” that I can’t back up.

How do others navigate this? Should I avoid these types of touching to save both of us from any potential heartache?
