So this is going to be a semi rant, any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated.
PART 1:
So we started this game in June and just finished it a few days ago. It was 7 games total stretched over 6 months, sometimes over a month would go by without a game. Not the biggest problem.
Anyways the basic plan was, it’s an ancient ruins quest, lost civilization type of thing. Originally planned to be 3-4 games. DMs words.
So by the last session many details have been forgotten due to the fact everyone is intoxicated when we play, I’m the only sober guy at the table and like I said before weeks and even a month sometimes between games. So it’s hard to remember what was an important detail In a game that was over 3 months ago.
The DM knows the whole plot so he thinks he provided enough clues for everyone to get the hook and then some. I thought I got it at least for the most part but some of it was lost in time. And I had most of the clues just could’ve used a previously on or a recap before the last few games.
PART 2:
Okay enough background information. Anyways it’s the last session of the game we’re in the boss fight we got him down, then there another boss we got that one.
So we’re mid fight and the PC is going for the “relic” he’s a noobie so I’m thing okay curiosity is getting the best of him. I’ve done similar things in my early days but then when the pc touches the relic it triggers a cutscene just for him (this is when we figure out his evil) “evil pc” proceeds to teleport out of the bottom of the dungeon and it’s just his on mission now. Leaving me and the rest of party to finish off the remaining enemies then play catch up.
It was at that moment where the rest of the party and me just had to sit back and take it, nothing we could do. We escaped and got a few shots off as the Evil PC does everything he wants. Like for example the DM gave him a mind control staff
(something super OP) (DM was stingy with magic items and healing potions this whole campaign)
idk what the exact spell but that’s what happened the evil PC then uses it on the last remaining boss and mind controlled him and proceeds to destroy our ship and then escape.
PART 3:
There was no catching up, no way to catch up because of the way the DM had planned things and the layout of the dungeon and ship mechanics.
I’m not against this concept of a turncoat or double agent or traitor but the way my DM executed it was horrible.
For a little background information this was guys experience for dnd, the one that played the evil PCs first time playing DND outside of Baldurs gate 3 and I can’t help but think the DM get over enthusiastic and just wanted to appeal to the noobie
There was no balance in this situation at all, the evil PC knew what the quest relic was before the last session when no else knew. The evil PC gets a bonus OP magic item at the end of the game as well as his warlock patron intervening on his behalf and teleporting him out of the dungeon and destroying our ship. There was nothing we could’ve done about any of that.
The biggest problem with this is that we’re not the biggest Role play group. It’s not like dude who ended up playing the evil PC had standard act for most of the game. And then in the last few games he started acting more secretive and erratic. So to give clues to the party that something may be up. So the game is balanced or just to give us a chance to figure out something was up.
Also me and the rest of the party were no saints either so it was hard to tell. There was a moment at some point early in the campaign where I wanted to sink an entire gunship so we could avoid witnesses.
It’s like after the evil pc touched the relic, it became the evil PC’s game. We were simply just around.
looking back if we could’ve just played every other weekend and sometimes back to back weekends. we easily could’ve played in 2-3 months half or less then of the time and half of these problems wouldn’t have come up.
My apologies for the bad grammar thanks for reading.
TLDR: DM and the noob (it’s his first time playing DND) PC team up against the party before the last session. DM allows PC to become evil PC and ended up Hijacking the last session of our campaign of 7 games over 6 months. Leaving me and the rest of the party to simple play catch up and not even get a chance to “win” or better said finish the quest.
I guess if anyone who’s read all of this could help me with something to say to my DM about my experience. We’ve talked about this session already and he knows it rubbed me the wrong way but I feel like he didn’t get the weight of what I was saying.
EDIT: I know you might not always get what you wanted out of game but holy shit this really pissed me off. Felt like I wasted a lot of time on this. Also I’ve played with this dm for a few years now nothing like this has ever happened. We still have our first campaign going.
