I’ve read lots of talk about how Indian and Asian programmers are vitally needed by our country under the H1B visa program because American engineers just don’t cut the mustard. We don’t study 18 hours a day, we have a social life, some of us even date.
I work in production. My company has numerous overseas teams. I can confirm that they are not better than us. The only thing they have to offer is that they are cheaper and way more servile.
However, even that doesn’t bear scrutiny. Each squad overseas has a designated QA, a couple teams even have two designated QAs. US squads share one QA among three teams. How much money can they possibly be saving when they have to hire designated babysitter to make sure that these people don’t break everything they touch?
And they are terrible at following instructions. There is a very specific merge process, and people don’t always violate that merge process, but when it’s violated it’s always one of the overseas teams.
I’m quite sure there are some people overseas for whom the H1B visa would be ideal, specialists in their field. But based on my experience, trying to use that to replace American developers with foreign labors might somehow end up being a bit cheaper, but you are definitely going to get an inferior product at the end.
