So I had this idea for a DnD campaign months ago, but I’m a newbie DM and with little to no time to set up something of this scale, specially at the scale I came up with.
This campaign would be a very mature one, but not the grindark “blood and gore all over the place” kind of story. The main idea in my head is a campaign where the PCs need to make the world and better place overall, because the BBEGs need to milk as much suffering from people as possible.
The settings would be this: in the future of the forgotten realms, some sharan cultists figured out a way to summon Shar to the material plane in her most pure form and essence. Her presence there immediately made the whole world start dying and, in some aspects, almost disintegrating. A very powerful mage, however, created a device that teleported people into a new crystal sphere (basically a separate solar system that exists isolated from the rest of the material plane), where they managed to rebuild everything from scratch.
Unfortunately, either because the old sharans also traveled to the new world, or because the cult reappeared organically, Shar has been able to destroy multiple crystal spheres, and each and every time, the old wise man’s device was used to save the survivors.
After using the device more than 70 times, it finally broke down completely. Its no longer possible to travel to a new world in the event that Shar is summoned. Not only that, but her actions have caused the upper and elemental planes to go to war, meaning all gods are to busy fighting in order to help anyone in their day-to-day lives, leaving mortals alone. Also mystra is dead.
Now the juicy bits: this campaing would change how magic works, and the weave and shadow weave were mixed and sundered into light and dark weave. The more suffering there is in the world, the more dark weave there is, and vice versa.
The players would have 2 options.
-
Help aliviate suffering and defeat the sharans thay are trying to ruin the world or-
-
Decide that the world suck anyway and make the end come faster.
The plot is structured like this in order to give players both space to be more proactive, rather than reactive or just following the plot cuz its whats expected of them, and to give playera a real choice between saving or dooming the world for their own reasons. It would require each player to come up with reasons why their PC is doing what their doing, which would (I hope) give them good reason to RP the character’s inner struggles.
There is more to it than what I’ve layed out here, but these are the basics
(Also yes I love Magi, the GOTG game and Enderal, how could you tell?)
