My players gave me the most incredible gift as I announced my retirement from DM’ing [Art] /u/Stratosfyr DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’m speechless.

Starting a new career in the new year for my dream job, but it’s shift work. No more weekly availability, and likely lots of overtime. My regular weekly DM’ing career is at an end.

I just finished my last campaign a couple weeks ago and was reminiscent; appreciative it happened and sad it was over.

One of the players from my last 2-3 campaigns, who I consider a close friend at this point (despite meeting online), reached out to ALL OF MY PAST PLAYERS over the past decade of me DM’ing and organized two things:

1) A get-together for everyone who could make it to hop in a call

2) An art piece done by one of my players with almost every PC in every campaign I’ve run over the years (that lasted beyond 1-2 months). This was presented to me in the call

This was all a surprised they all kept from me.

I rarely get acts of appreciation in my real life, but this moment just tore me apart emotionally.

For all DM’s out there, especially new ones: keep going. Put the effort in to make each game a fun and rewarding experience for your players… and they’ll give right back, whether in-game or in moments like what happened to me.

This hobby has become so central to my life and I appreciate every player, every moment, and everything from epic moments to DM screw-ups on my part. I’m not a perfect DM; I’m just a passionate one.

Good luck to the D&D community out there. both to DM’s and Players!

May your rolls be high and your DCs low!

Rule 3 Description: An art piece created by one of my recent players depicting an entire cast of PC’s played in the games I DM’d, including the main goddess of my homebrew worlds, another PC I played, and characters spanning campaigns over ten years. The top left is the goddess Kayrah, a bard PC I ran who asked the goddess of beauty (who she served) how humans see beauty in the world despite their lifespanse. She was made human in the first campaign I played, and got to experience it. And all the homebrew worlds, stories I told, were attempts to demonstrate that there is beauty, through conflict and trials, as well as moments of friendship and victory. In a way, she’s a metaphor for my DM philosophy, on top of being
