I want to play… this sub scares me /u/chiralimposition DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’m wondering if it comes down to not having the vocab to say what type of game I want yet.

Every other post seems to be about insufferable players or picky DMs. I’ve been wanting to play for years but have no friends who play. I’m a little nervous that finding a game I vibe with will be really hard.

I want to play a game where we are essentially weaving a narrative together. I care a lot more about the story we create than a prefabricated one or power gaming. I’d prefer if a DM is down for what is thrown at them in most cases. I’d prefer if players weren’t trying to be the main character and instead cared about the universe and the arc they’re creating.

What do you do to find groups you fit with? Are people as difficult as this sub may make it seem? How do I discover my preferences quickly? Maybe this indicates I’d be a better DM than a player?
