Are the gen alpha slang and subcultures really that cringe, or is it just millenials (who are the core adult demographic right now) entering their “kids are annoying” age? /u/lone_lorn_creature No such thing as stupid questions

Maybe it’s just me but I don’t understand how, for example, the emo/scene culture, classic tumblr, fandoms etc etc and all the associated vocabulary are somehow more mature and dignified than whatever it is the modern kids are up to. I know that’s not the point of gen alpha slander, but I mean come on, hypocrisy much?

At the same time and on another note, I do notice my own attitudes shifting, like feeling more nostalgia for even the crappiest things from 90’s-00’s, or no longer trying to keep up with random trends even out of curiosity, so I can focus on what actually interests me instead. This is a natural part of getting older I guess. However, what sometimes comes along with it is a certain disdain for modern times and younger people. So whenever I see another meme talking about how alpha phrases are soooo dumb all I see is a fellow person in their thirties who just happens to have grown into a slightly crankier thirty year old.

On the other hand, and I was unsure if maybe I should have worded the subject this way, we are finally witnessing what happens when people of such different ages all actively exist on the internet. People have always struggled to seamlessly blend with those with different background, life experience etc, and banded together based on shared characteristics like age. Except this is the first time in history that it’s happening inside such a unique common space, like some kind of giant universal school hall or living room. Everybody is pretty much constantly clashing with everybody, not just this generation vs that, but every single combination. So everyone is a little too agitated and insecure, I think, and the squabbles grow more varied and severe, and it’s all amplified across lots of social groups that normally wouldn’t interact so much.

So it figures that when we’ve gotten this new wave of users who are also unprecedentally online, the multigenerational crowd decided to bully them for being new and looking like they were born on the internet, unlike the rest of us who grew up with older technologies/older-style socialization and weren’t quite so plugged in. Like we all get to be the collective adult/”old school” for once, and feel united in that, and it’s so refreshing that it’s hard not to indulge the temptation.

But again, that’s just my theory. What do you think?
