I am not looking for generalized answers. The main reason for fun is obviously spending time with friends. I am looking for more specific answers, not just ”combat” or a ”good story”.
Let me give examples from myself and my party so you better understand;
I enjoy the game most when i am(and we as a party) influencing and changing the game world. I really enjoy leaving long lasting impacts on the world and seeing the consequences of my actions. Consequences are not just negative, every action should have a resault. If i had to stay at level 5 through the whole campaign but could have a drastic impact on the world every session, i would take it.
My closest friend in the group values character development above anything. He despises rangers for scaling terribly and when he homebrews something(we do workshops regularly) you clearly see that a big part of the power budget is reserved for crazy high level abilities. His enjoyment comes from watching everybodies characters grow in power and experience. Even if he plays the weakest character at level 5 he will enjoy the game for the fantasy of becoming the strongest at level 20.
Another friend we have plays the game for scenes where he is in a position of power. He cares much less about the mechanics and more about his position ”storywise”. He always fantasizes about scenes of him overpowering weak foes. This is not a power fantasy btw, even if he is level 3 he would get the upmost enjoyment from bullying a bandit. The guy lives for one liners.
4th friend enjoys unveiling secrets and revealing mysteries. They dont even have to be tied to her character or the main plot, even learning more about other characters giver her a lot of fun. She always leaves holes in her stories for dm to fill so she is constantly suprised about the development in her story.
Our last friend loves being the loved and adored one. She loves clerics and being the support. Always trying to help others and seeking the gratitudes. She enjoys getting validated by others and being the ”cute girl with cute personality”. Never really seeking the spot light and doesnt have a problem with it(we asked her multiple times).
So what do you enjoy the most? Maybe you can talk about your party as well!
