What are your favourite projects to give to job applicants /u/croissantowl CSCQ protests reddit

The company I’m working for is currently looking for 1-2 new dotnet developers and during the interview process we want to give the job applicants a task which they would have to do at home so we can somewhat gauge their experience level and general coding style.

I’m a fan of having them code a web app to shorten links with sqlite as database since I feel this touches most of what we are looking for (frontend, backend, database)

But I don’t know if this might be a too easy for developers with intermediate knowledge. So my question is what is or was your favorite project you either had to do as an applicant, or have applicants do during the process ?

Sidenote: I’m not the one in charge of hiring the new developers but I have some say because they will replace me when I’m leaving in i couple months and as such I will be the one to train them.
