Reneged on SWE offer last year for research, company wants me back? /u/tinytreeisgreen CSCQ protests reddit

I’m a junior in college majoring in computer science. I recent got an offer for a SWE summer internship at a FAANG company. I’ve interned there before (2 years ago), and they gave me another return offer last year, which I initially accepted. However, I ended up reneging on it after receiving an offer from a top research institution’s REU program which I did research in the field I want.

I’m super grateful for the FAANG SWE offer and the team is great, but I don’t see myself going into software engineering long-term. My focus has been on computer science research, and I’m planning to go to grad school. I’ve applied to some competitive research internships for next summer, but there’s always a chance I won’t get in.

I’ve been clear with the company that I want to work on research focused teams, as that aligns with my long-term goal of going to grad school, but they’ve repeatedly placed me on software engineering teams instead.

I’ve thought about asking for a deadline extension or even seeing if the internship could be moved to the fall instead of summer but I’m not sure how that would be received. (As I wouldn’t mind working during the fall semester)

Has anyone been in a similar situation or have advice on what I should do?
