DM refused to let me use a spell /u/Adhamrollin DnD: Roll for Initiative!

Hello, This may be long but I would like to know if i am in the wrong here. Some information I am a relatively new player that’s been playing for a few months. I am not experienced on all aspects of the game but i know most of the important rules. I was playing a Hexblade Warlock, i wouldn’t call myself an optimizer but i like to do some cool team thing with my other party members. I was talking with the Artificer about the Darkness spell, and that i also have Devil’s Sight to see through it which could grant us some cool stealthy moments or combat advantage. DM was also in the Call and told me that Darkness wouldn’t work, now i asked why. He said because thats not how light works and that the Darkness would be covered even though the spell goes as following

Darkness

2nd-level evocation

Casting Time: 1 action Range: 60 feet Components: V, M (bat fur and a drop of pitch or piece of coal) Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

Magical darkness spreads from a point you choose within range to fill a 15-foot radius sphere for the duration. The darkness spreads around corners. A creature with darkvision can’t see through this darkness, and nonmagical light can’t illuminate it.

If the point you choose is on an object you are holding or one that isn’t being worn or carried, the darkness emanates from the object and moves with it. Completely covering the source of the darkness with an opaque object, such as a bowl or a helm, blocks the darkness.

If any of this spell’s area overlaps with an area of light created by a spell of 2nd level or lower, the spell that created the light is dispelled.

Spell Lists. Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

He told me that the Darkness would be covered, I said i would just cast it on my hat (my character wore a hat) He said no. He told my that it was an “unoriginal” choice and then started listening other min maxing options which i really didn’t care about, He said he gives ALL his monsters blindsight in a 5 foot range, My character died before the end of the next session but that’s another story for another day. Was i wrong?

Update: I read through some of your comments and opinion and want to reply to some stuff

1-Many people said that Darkness would be a hindrance, and you are correct. But i wanted it to be a situational spell and not something i would push every encounter, For example if it was an open field with a lot of space to move, or i would also ask my Allies if i should cast it or not. I would try to be as much of a team player as possible

2- I already left the game, i share some other games with this guy and he’s not the most pleasant. He critiques everyone’s choices in anything and is just not the most fun to be around. We are a small group and sometimes other people like to host games, and overall i am not the only person who doesn’t enjoy him being around. I stopped playing in his game but still in the group as i enjoy it a lot
