I’m currently a student, and I was lucky enough to receive 2 internship offers for the summer. Honestly I just want some advice from experienced people to make sure I’m not screwing away my future.
Offer 1:
– “Software Engineering Intern” at Tech company near my university
– $40/hr hybrid and apparently lets you work remote upon request
– Full time pay is like $120k/yr base maybe, but there isn’t a well defined pipeline to get a return offer 🙁
Offer 2:
– “Computer Science Intern” at 3 Letter Federal Agency far away from me
– Maybe like $25-30/hr fully in person? Only have a conditional offer so not sure.
– Full time pay is pretty low like $70k/yr, expected for government
– TS/SCI security clearance with full scope poly
I was originally going to take offer 1 in a heartbeat because of better location and pay, but something that’s swayed my decision lately is that offer 2 is sponsoring a TS/SCI with full scope poly, which could seriously make my new grad job search so much easier, since I’ve heard that the talent pool with TS/SCI clearances is pretty small, since H1B workers and even most domestic workers aren’t usually eligible or able to obtain such a clearance.
Am I right about this or am I being dumb?
For reference, money matters a lot to me and even if I did go with the gov’t position, I would try to pivot to cleared positions at Microsoft or Amazon for new grad. I’m mainly just scared of the bloodbath of a new grad job hunt for non-cleared people.
