Would a price monitoring project that implements a web scraping API be frowned upon to potential hiring managers? /u/CletussDiabetuss CSCQ protests reddit

Hi everyone,

For a little context, I’m a junior CS student that’s struggling to find an internship. I want to add a new project to my portfolio to attempt to make myself more marketable.

I wanted a project that would have real world benefits, and came up with the idea of making a “buy one get one free” offer monitor, for a very popular grocery store in my State.

This store doesn’t have an API, nor does it provide any way to notify people of when a particular product has this special, so the only way I can think of obtaining the information I need is via web scraping.

I’ve started writing the project using Puppeteer and so far everything is working out well.

However, I’ve had to implement some counter-bot detection methods in order for the script to work, and this got me thinking as to whether this project would be considered unethical to potential hiring managers.

Thanks.
