What are the odds of doing Freelance programming as a ‘beginner’ /u/CorvusMaximus90 CSCQ protests reddit

lately I been second guessing my current career, Not because I hate it, I enjoy it. It just…. Doesnt pay the best. 25.00/hr. I would have to go to school for an addtional 2 years to get a increase. I currently hold an assoicates in Medical Technology. So now, I’m in between choosing CS(Would be an AS sadly, because I dont wanna press into another 4 years of school) or completeing the MT, 2 extra years

Which lead me to this question/ Second guessment.

I have experience in:

  • Java – used to make IRC(when this was popular years ago) bots as services
  • Use to mod for some games like MineCraft, UT2004(uScript, which was similar to Java)
  • Limited C++, whenever we switched UE3, and dabbled around
  • Godot(GDscript, based on python)

I written a Raffle bot, a simple MUD(non multiplayer tho) style-game, and made a simple program to store, edit, and retrieve info. All of these were in Java, and done years ago.

So I understand the structure of coding, and the basics, But I never pressed into it. It was always a hobby to me.

The real question is, If I was to dedicate time to actually learning 1-2 of them, what are the odds of being able to do freelance work for it since I dont have a CS degree. I see things like Upwork could allow me to do that. And I would need to find a way to prove I know what im doing right?

I’m 34, and I really DO NOT wanna go back to college for a 4 year degree, from scratch
