Letting my players chose a magic item to get later in a campaign /u/SliestCafe10661 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

I’m going to be dming for the first time for my friends and as the title says I’m letting my players choose a very rare magic item or a rare plus uncommon magic item that they’ll get later in the campaign with the hopes it’ll give them more autonomy over how their characters will end up and that it’ll also give me a better look at how they’re trying to build their characters so I can plan later encounters and loot for them.

I’m kinda curious what everyones opinions are of this idea and how they might change it if they decided to implement it into their games.

Yes I know my grammar is terrible I’m too tired to care enough to fix it
