I”m a new player, i had a disagreement/argument with my DM google says i’m right but he says i’m wrong what do you think? /u/Ok_Lack_8240 DnD: Roll for Initiative!

tonight i was playing my fourth game of DND that i’ve played ever in my life (i never had a group to play with) during the run tonight i got a wand of magic missle with 7 charges. the issue is not about how to use the wand that is outlined specifcly. it’s about the spell magic missle.

I was looking at how the spell worked in the rule book. it’s quite simple as we all know

Magic Missile

Magic Missile

1 Evocation

  • Casting Time: 1 action
  • Range: 120 feet
  • Target: A creature of your choice that you can see within range
  • Components: V S
  • Duration: Instantaneous
  • Classes: Sorcerer, Wizard
  • You create three glowing darts of magical force. Each dart hits a creature of your choice that you can see within range. A dart deals 1d4 + 1 force damage to its target. The darts all strike simultaneously, and you can direct them to hit one creature or several.
  • At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 2nd level or higher, the spell creates one more dart for each slot above 1st.

the issue i had was i said “that’s cool i can choose any creature for the amount of darts i have” he said “yea but only if you hit them” i was like “what do you mean hit them”

he said that if i seperate the darts and go to hit other creatures i would have to roll an attack roll to see if hit those other creatures cause that is spell casting 101 you dont’ just automaticly hit those creatures.

i googled it right then and there went to show him and he siad ‘i’m not going by blogs or forums i’m going by the book”

the issue is, even though the book says “each dart hits a creature of your choice that you can see” cause it dosn’t say something like “each dart automaticly hits a creature of your choice that you can see” he thinks i ahve to make a attack roll for each creature i go to hit even if i am hitting one creature.

am i taking crazy pills? or am i right? it’s a gurrentee hit no matter if all darts hit one creature or a seperate the darts to different creatures.
