Cooked? 5 yoe on outdated stack and looking at layoff. /u/Zealousideal-Mix-567 CSCQ protests reddit

I have about 5 years of experience on a mostly outdated tech stack. I live in the Midwest in a mid-sized metropolitan area.

It’s been pretty well implied that we will be laid off within a year or so, maybe sooner.

Currently there are only a few (maybe) jobs in this stack in my city. There are around 1000 graduates in CS in the area every year.

My career trajectory has gone unpaid -> $13/hr no benefits -> 56K -> 20/hr no benefits -> 70K’ish. I have saved about 125 thousand in my entire life so far. My parents have spent more supporting me and sending me to school than I have earned. I am currently 33 years old and live in Mom’s basement.

I sacrificed my youth, physical fitness, social life, and family life to pursue this. I sometimes work from 9AM till 3-4AM (say two to three times a month). I have forgone starting a family. I am fully sedentary and asocial. I am being disowned by one side of the family for being a failure on the above measurements, and will likely be kicked out soon.

I have never drank or done drugs other than light cannabis usage. I have never gotten into trouble with the law. I work from 9AM to 3-4AM at least a few times a month, and frequently study these subjects outside of work hours besides.

Am I cooked? Or is this a realistic and common outcome for a computer engineering major.
