What the new administration will try to do is becoming exceedingly clear.
Tech salaries are quite high in the U.S, relative to the rest of the world, because of strong domestic demand.
Clearly, corporations and the managerial class are not happy about this, because it means their operating costs are higher and profits are lower.
You need to understand that these people, like Elon Musk, are parasites. They view the world in the context of profit. Anything to lower operating costs regardless of societal impact. Their brain has been shaped by decades of such goals. They are laser focused on this goal, regardless of the downstream effects.
Under the Trump/Musk administration, they’re going to pursue a Canada-like strategy of accepting millions of professional immigrants from countries like India, and tie them up in an H1B or H1B-like visa that prevents them from leaving their employer while working for subpar wages.
By over-saturating the labor pool, they’ll effectively drive American SWE salaries down.
Look at the H1B’s that Elon Musk’s companies are hiring. These aren’t “specialty professional” positions. These are entry level associate positions.
Wondering where all the entry-level positions are going? There you go.
I promise you that this will happen. It has already happened in Canada.
I think we’re all mostly aware of this by now. The question now becomes: what do we do about it.
Doctors have a very powerful lobby and have been very effective in ensuring that legislation favors their industry and careers. There are many legislative mechanisms at play that prevent an over-saturation of the medical field.
Airline Pilots also have a very powerful union with significant leverage, and in part, because of this, airline pilot salaries have been skyrocketing the past few years. Their recent strike secured them a massive pay raise.
I think we need to do something similar. I understand that there are systemic flaws with re: to unions, but we have to focus on the bigger picture here.
The NYT strike was a good first step, but we need a national movement.
I think we need to begin something like a union to ensure we are economically represented.
One thing is clear: we need to act fast, and be aggressive in defending our interests. SWE’s in the U.S are well-paid. We have significant economic leverage, the issue is we’re all fragmented.
What are some considerations that I’m not aware of? What sort of movements would you like to see?
Are there any existing movements that are doing a good job of representing our interests?
