Seriously, there are H1b workers who have come here over a decade ago are eligible for a Green Card and have been waiting for 10+ years. And they have to stay on H1b this entire time, renewing every 3 years, worrying about losing their job and having to leave in the meantime.
And these people have kids who grew up here and have to think about self deporting at the age of 21 because they didn’t get their GC in time. They can no longer be a dependent of their parents in terms of immigration.
Why not focus on these issues? Why are we talking about increasing the H1b cap without indication that we are in dire need of more workers?
It’s simple, once these people have their GC’s they can’t be exploited any more. I’m not saying eliminate the H1bs. But rather that before we start increasing these caps, do we need them and why not fix other issues with the immigration system.
We should really talk about why a worker or a family has been living and contributing here for X amount of years but are still stuck in a line to get a GC
